How to Do the Battling Ropes

Beginner cardio exercise with none.

The Battling Ropes is cardio work done for time rather than sets and reps, using no equipment. It raises your heart rate to build endurance and conditioning, and works well as a warm-up before lifting or as a session on its own. SSS Workout Assistant adds it to your plan automatically as part of your weekly routine.

How to perform it

  1. 1For this exercise you will need a heavy rope anchored at its center 15-20 feet away.
  2. 2Standing in front of the rope, take an end in each hand with your arms extended at your side.
  3. 3This will be your starting position.
  4. 4Initiate the movement by rapidly raising one arm to shoulder level as quickly as you can.
  5. 5As you let that arm drop to the starting position, raise the opposite side.
  6. 6Continue alternating your left and right arms, whipping the ropes up and down as fast as you can.

How to program the Battling Ropes

  • Start every Battling Ropes session with a few easy minutes before raising the intensity.
  • The Battling Ropes is timed rather than counted: 5–10 easy minutes works as a warm-up, 20–40 minutes at a conversational pace builds endurance, and short hard intervals with easy recoveries fit a 15–20 minute session.
  • Keep most sessions at a pace where you can still talk in short sentences, and save hard intervals for one to three days a week.
  • To progress, add five minutes to steady sessions or one extra interval, not both in the same week.
