How to Do the Close-Grip Front Lat Pulldown

Beginner back exercise with machine.

The Close-Grip Front Lat Pulldown is a beginner-level back exercise that works several muscles together, led by the lats, using machine. How to perform it

  1. 1Attach a close-grip V-handle to the lat pulldown cable and sit with your thighs secured under the pad.
  2. 2Grab the handle with your palms facing each other and arms straight overhead.
  3. 3Lean back slightly and lift your chest.
  4. 4Pull the handle down toward your upper chest by driving your elbows down and back.
  5. 5Squeeze your lats and upper back at the bottom.
  6. 6Let the handle rise slowly until your arms are straight and you feel a stretch in your lats.

How to program the Close-Grip Front Lat Pulldown

  • Do the Close-Grip Front Lat Pulldown early in your session while you're fresh — compound lifts deserve your best energy.
  • Warm up with one or two lighter sets before your working sets to prime the movement.
  • As a compound lift, 3–5 sets of 5–8 reps builds strength, while 3–4 sets of 8–12 reps favours muscle growth. Rest 90–180 seconds between sets so you can move quality load.
  • To progress, add a small amount of load only after you can hit the top of your rep range with clean form.

What to pair it with
