How to Do the Smith Machine Reverse Lunge

Beginner glutes exercise with machine.

The Smith Machine Reverse Lunge is a beginner-level glutes exercise that works several muscles together, led by the glutes, using machine. How to perform it

  1. 1Set the bar across your upper back/traps on the smith machine and stand tall with feet hip-width apart.
  2. 2Unrack the bar, then step one foot straight back and bend both knees to lower the rear knee toward the floor, keeping your front shin vertical and your torso upright.
  3. 3Drive through your front heel to bring the rear foot back to the starting position.
  4. 4The guided bar takes balance out of the movement, so focus on squeezing the glutes as you stand.
  5. 5Repeat on the same side or alternate legs for the desired reps.

How to program the Smith Machine Reverse Lunge

  • Do the Smith Machine Reverse Lunge early in your session while you're fresh — compound lifts deserve your best energy.
  • Warm up with one or two lighter sets before your working sets to prime the movement.
  • As a compound lift, 3–5 sets of 5–8 reps builds strength, while 3–4 sets of 8–12 reps favours muscle growth. Rest 90–180 seconds between sets so you can move quality load.
  • To progress, add a small amount of load only after you can hit the top of your rep range with clean form.

Easier and harder variations

What to pair it with
