How to Do the Wide-Grip Barbell Bench Press
Intermediate chest exercise with barbell.
The Wide-Grip Barbell Bench Press is an intermediate-level chest exercise that works several muscles together, led by the chest, using barbell. How to perform it
- 1Lie on a flat bench with your eyes under the bar and your feet flat on the floor.
- 2Grip the bar noticeably wider than shoulder-width.
- 3Pull your shoulder blades back and down into the bench, then unrack the bar.
- 4Lower it slowly to your mid-chest, keeping your wrists stacked over your elbows.
- 5Press the bar back up to straight arms.
- 6The wider grip shortens the range and shifts more work to the chest, so start lighter than your regular bench press.
How to program the Wide-Grip Barbell Bench Press
- Do the Wide-Grip Barbell Bench Press early in your session while you're fresh — compound lifts deserve your best energy.
- Warm up with one or two lighter sets before your working sets to prime the movement.
- As a compound lift, 3–5 sets of 5–8 reps builds strength, while 3–4 sets of 8–12 reps favours muscle growth. Rest 90–180 seconds between sets so you can move quality load.
- To progress, add a small amount of load only after you can hit the top of your rep range with clean form.
